The Pudong Canal exists as the core of the city’s water network. The canal’s transformation helps Chuansha meet the needs of its growing urban developments while building a sustainable attraction for residents. SWA’s proposal focuses on maximizing the potential of the water system in Chuansha, targeting three major areas along the Pudong Canal: the ecological and livable shore, the historical and humanistic bay, and the port of future gathering. Each includes a bridge and a core building, anchoring ecological, living, and recreational spaces that can serve future urban construction.

Despite its long history, Chuansha’s urban development hasn’t experienced the same fast-paced expansion as other neighborhoods due to its location far from the center of Shanghai. The renovation of the Pudong Canal has the potential to result in the increased recognition of Chuansha’s natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and water sports.

SWA’s design forms a vibrant channel that connects the old town and the riverbank and provides a wetland park. The city’s proposed Pudong Canal transformation includes widening the waterway by 20 meters over 20 years, meaning the current riverbank design is only a temporary solution. Therefore, SWA’s design prioritizes a low-cost strategy by digging out an inland river for kayaking and other water recreation activities, which reduces the workload for the future demolition plan.
