Moving Landscape:  A Proposal to Connect Port Houston to Its City

Port Houston operates at the dynamic confluence of industry, transportation networks, community, and ecological systems.  The Port is critical in servicing over $617 billion in economic activity across the United States and providing over one million jobs in Texas. It has propelled Houston’s growth for more than a century and continues to be vital to the City’s future.

However, the cultural and urban identity of the Port’s vast landscape remains largely hidden from view with its logistics not always well understood.

Moving Landscape choreographs a dynamic design strategy to create exceptional places throughout this shifting terrain. The proposal, forged by a dynamic team of designers at SWA and graduate students selected from institutions across the world, weaves a tapestry of urban spaces and ecological services across the Port Houston reach.

SWA is a landscape architecture, urban design and planning firm. Throughout the summer of 2017, graduate students in Landscape Architecture from across the United States and abroad collaborated with SWA staff to develop this unique vision of Port Houston as a key landscape of the City.
